FMOD System Development
A brutal dieselpunk heavy-artillery game where you dominate the battlefield through a colossal war machine.
Overview
I was tasked by the team to develop an FMOD system which could be used to dynamically control the sound of various machines controlled by RPM onboard the Iron Nest turret.
I achieved this by creating an engine system which altered the pitch, speed and filtering of a synthesised engine loop in line with the RPM parameter fed by the game. Then designing the sound for a series of metal 'crank' loops to be layered on top of the engine sound. 10 loops were created at varying speeds, in order to create a natural speed transition. The engine layer provided a sense of power, whereas the metal layers provide a tactile and real feel to the system.
My only reference for this system was given in the form of gameplay footage, which posed an interesting challenge for developing the FMOD system as I did not have access to the game in engine. To counteract this, I linked FMOD to my DAW via the extension REAMod. This allowed me to control game events and parameters through the timeline of my DAW, to simulate them being called by the engine for testing. The project and bank files were setup in a way where the system could be slotted into the game engine upon delivery.
